Switch to Router Connection?

May 30, 2012 at 00:08:22
Specs: Windows xp, 2

We have installed 24 port unmanageable switch of 3COM. And internet is coming through our Broadband wireless router.
So try to connect switch and router with straight cable. But it's not working. I also tried with Crossover but not succeed.
But when disconnect cable from switch and connect direct cable from pc to modem, internet work as well as wifi works.

But when i connect straight or crossover cable from switch to modem, internet is not working any where, not pc connected with switch, not on pc directly connected with router also not with wifi connected laptop.

I also changed cables with new one. and also tried with switch 1st port and 24th port.

Currently router is set as 4th port is connected with ISP internet ONT box from where internet coming. Then router have id & password of internet.. which distribute internet with other 3 port. This setup is done by our ISP only.

So why this happens? it looks like it doesn't have problem from ISP side? does it?

Is Router is faulty or switch?

What is proper way to connected router with switch? in which port to which port? by which cable?

Thanks in advance.

When I get this right, you have a modem, a router, a switch and the clients (PCs, maybe printers, and other devices).

So the connection looks like this:

ISP to modems WAN port
Modems LAN port to routers WAN port
Routers LAN port to switch LAN port
Switch LAN ports to client PCs

no, there is no modem. We have only one ont box 4m isp, where fax.telephone, internet divided from one fiber optic to diffrent normal cable.
From there one straight cable to router 4th lan port, no wan port there, only 4 lan port and one adsl port only.. Which is router + modem +wifi. There to switch again straight cable.

Ok so in that case, the ADSL port, which is similar to WAN port, is not connected and therefore not in use.

So you simply have to connect the uplink port of the switch to one of the LAN ports of the router.

Does the router have an internal ip address such as 192.168.x.x ?
What ip address does a computer get, when connected to one of the routers LAN ports?

if you connect two pcs to the switch with patch cables and assign them ip addresses in the same subnet can they ping each other?

if not return the defective switch.

@Paulsep - But, There is no UPLINK port in my switch. Might it possible that my switch have auto MDI/MDIx.
Router IP address is (As written in my 1st post)
computer gets perfect ip like or so.

@wanderer - Yes... even i can access my all server data when that router cable from switch connected.

UPDATE - i called ISP guy. Actually last day i removed that cable which is coming from main fiber optic ONT ISP cabinet because because of it pc could not connect to server too.
So he just came, and plug that cable again.. And finish.. Again all working like a charm.

However after that for my satisfaction i removed crossover cable from router-switch. and puts new Straight cable between them into router 4th port and switch 1st port.
I hope it will work from now on.

But still i could not find exact answer of my question.
What is proper condition to connect Wifi router(Router+modem) to non managable 24port switch?

You simply plug a LAN port of the Wifi Router to the switch.
All connected Wifi PCs gets ip address configuration via DHCP and can connect to the server or to the internet like the wired PCs do.

equipment should support mdi/mdix which means it should work with a patch or xover cable. Both should not matter.
