might want to review my answer here

This is assuming you have eliminated spyware/malware/virus's as the issue.

Did you tried freeware like wireshark? It does statistics on protocols using your bandwidth.

Two more freeware suggestions:

Colasoft Capsa Free
Spiceworks

actually i called up dell tech support who said windows needed to be reinstalled. did so. so far no problems so that mustve been a solution. dont quite know what exactly the prob was but i think a jabbering NIC is a good bet. when i login to my ISP's account for how much of the alloted bandwidth ive used its not the same as the figures on the network monitor i installed.

anyone?

havent you check both PC and laptop with antivirus, have you?
Some viruses works as service and try to connect with internet, which is cause of "zero connect to network". I'd do it if I were in ur shoes.
To be sure that the system is clean scan it with a few antiviruses and with free AVZ. It doesnt require the installation on PC. It also checks all services and alarm you about shady services that are going on ur pc.
here it is http://www.brothersoft.com/avz-anti...
good luck
