Some identical pc's can't connect to printer. At work we have 22 identical pc's connected to the same printer. 19 of the pc's are connected to the shared printer, but 3 pc's can't connect to the printer. I have downloaded the appropriate drivers on each pc. When I try to connect to the printer, I'm prompted for a log on and password. I have tried all the combinations that are used on the pc, including the admin credentials, but message says these log ons and passwords are not sufficient. Any suggestions? Thanks,

I finally have all pc's connected to the printer. Earlier I stated that I had 3 pc's not connected. but I actually had 5 not connected. For the pc's that initially connected to printers, I had downloaded the drivers from the internet, figuring they would be the latest ones. Anyway, I installed the drivers from our old printer CD to one of the pc's that I couldn't get connected, and it worked. The next 3 pc's that hadn't worked connected without downloading the CD drivers, but on the last pc I had to use the CD drivers again, go figure.

Add the domain administrator user & password to the local machines, in the control panel.

We have a work group not a domain. All passwords from our network have been tried.

How is the printer shared? Is there a print server? Does the printer have an IP address? Is it shared through another machine? What OS are the identical machines? Are all machines on the same subnet? XP has a 10 connection limit which shouldn't bother you unless there is something strange with the setup.

Printer is shared through another computer in a lab setting with all 22 pc's being in the same room. IP address is that of the pc that the printer is directly connected to. Not an actual print server. Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. Same subnet. Guess the thing that baffles me the most is that all 22 pc's can connect to the printer in the admin account, but only 19 of them can connect thru the guest account. And, of course, we need all pc's using the guest account so that no one accidentally messes up a pc. I appreciate your interest in helping me.

On the machines that don't work click start, run, type
LUSRMGR.MSC & press enter. Click on users, right click on guest & make sure that the permissions match the PCs that work.

Click on my name above in this response and read my “how-to” guide titled, “Installing a Network Printer: version 2

NOTE: that guide was written for XP so location of Printer Wizard will be: Start >> Devices & Printers
