Socket error

Specs: Windows Vista, 3GB
I came top visit my Dad and he has a HP Pavilion a6600f running Windows Vista. I am not sure when it stopped work or if it ver worked. The problem he is having is that we cannot seem to get to any web pages. I either get an 404 error or the url changes to http:///. In addition we are getting a Socket Error: 10061, Port 110, Protocol: POP.No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it. If I do an ipconfig it shows we have an IP address, and I am able to ping things like www.google.ca and pop.telus.net which is the incoming mail server we are using in Incredimail.

I ran Malwarebytes and it found on infected item which it cleaned up but the problem still persists. Does anyone have any ideas of what the problem is.

Run Hijack This. Post the log if you don't know what to delete.

There seems to be a number of needed files missing. Try a restore point to a date before the problems started. If that doesn't work, try are repair install.

Hi,

I did a restore back as far as I could (Mar 07th). I plugged in the ethernet cable and tried to go to google. I had success so I immediately unplugged the ethernet cable, and then installed AVG from a USB key. I then updated AVG from an update file on the USB key. I turned on the firewall and then plugged in the ethernet cable. I tried to do an AVG update but was told it could not contact the server. I started up IE and tried to go to google and once again it doesn't work.

I am not sure how it could stop working so soon.

Hi,

I tried the restore again and had quite a time. The restore failed a couple of times, and of course each time it created a new restore point, so it removed the latest one. I now restored to Mar 26th. I then installed AVG, updated AVG, turned on the firewall, and then rebooted and ensured all security issues were resolved. Once I rebooted everything seem to look okay so I plugged in the ethernet cable to connect to the internet. Windows Messenger instantly connected and signed on. However, windows update, avg update, windows defender update all fail on error code 0x80072EFE. In addition all web page requests result in 'IE cannot display the webpage'. I am currently researching the error but have not resolved it yet.

Do you mean USB drive when you say Key? If you reinstalled AVG from a corrupt USB drive, that would answer your question how it could go bad so soon.

How do you know when a politician is lying? His mouth is moving.

Yes I meant USB drive. At this point MSN messenger works fine but all updates fail to connect. My concer about keeping try a system restore is that it seems to recreate another one which drops the oldest one off the end. Is there anything I can do to preserve it?

Hi there,

I am leaving tomorrow to go back home and things did not seem to be getting any better. My Dad only bought this computer in February so since I was doing a system restore back to March I decided to bite the bullet and just do a factory restore. Everything seems to be fine now. Thanks for what help you were able to give.
