Specs: Windows Server 2008, 4GB
Hello All,

I don't have much skill in the networking field so I need
your help. Alright I am trying to set up a home server
using Windows Server 2008 R2. The machine is
already built and it ready to go.

Information about current network set up:
Comcast Modem connected to a DLink router. On
client connected wired to router. Powerline connects
another client in a different room. A Xbox and various
laptops are connected through wireless.

What the server needs to do:
Backup all PCs and Laptops
Act as a file share/media storage
Act as a print server
Virtual Machines
Host Websites

Also RDP and outside internet access needed.

So now the question:
How do I set this up? What roles do I need? Difference
between DNS and DHCP...Am I using both? What do I
do about security(not looking for new hardware)?

If you have links to tutorials or other help please
share.

"Backup all PCs and Laptops'
can't be done without 3rd party software like backup exec with remote agents loaded on the pcs and laptops

"Act as a file share/media storage
Act as a print server"
File and print server roles

"Virtual Machines
Host Websites
Also RDP and outside internet access needed. "

Sorry CowboyBebopFan but all of this is advanced networking that took some of us many years to learn

This is like asking how to tear an engine down and rebuilt it. They write 4" thick books on this stuff. You need to get local help.

For back up couldn't I just have windows back up to a drive on
the server.

Could you give me tips or links to anything?
I'm trying to find an explanation on the basic steps I need to take
with in windows server 2008.

Maybe I'm not giving enough information I will post more when I
have time.

Doing the reverse laptop backup to the server can be done if you plan on the server having that much available space.

If you want to tackle this alone you need a 2008 server book. One of the MS training book courses will run you thru setting everything up.
