You presently have a VPN configured between home and office, or, you connect to the office using a VPN client? Please detail this information complete with the make/model of any/all hardware used and the name of any software.

This "unsecured wireless network" to which you refer. Is this at home or at work? If work, I sure hope this unsecured WLAN (that anybody with a laptop and a wireless NIC could connect to) doesn't give access to any sensitive or important information. In any case, you should NEVER leave any wireless network unsecured. That's just asking for trouble. You should, at a minimum, use the highest level of encryption possible and a strong (complex) password on it to prevent intrusion.

I suspect you're suffering from a configuration problem but it's impossible to diagnose without a little more detail on your setup and the equipment/software involved.

It matters not how straight the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate;
I am the captain of my soul.
