Rate limit on specific port from specific range

Specs: hp, switch
Is it possible to enable an absolute value rate limit using QOS on a HP ProCurve 5406 switch for a particular IP range on a specific port?

Is there a way to configure our HP 5406 with an absolute rate limit on "WAN" port for that server's IP range? I would like to limit it to only being capable of sending 1Mbps worth of traffic over the head end at once.

Everything in the documentation points towards priority queues, which as far as I can tell, isn't really what I want.

Baring accomplishing this goal using rate limiting is there a better way to prevent our services from accidentally saturating this connection?

i thimkong about somthing like that:

class ipv4 rate-limit-port-A1
match ip any
policy qos port-a1-ratelimit
class servers-to-be-slowed action rate-limit kbps 1000
interface A1 service-policy port-a1-ratelimit in

I'm not sure about you have any ideas?

thanks a lot!

Without actual hands-on experience with the equipment in question (and I have none) it would be very hard to help you with this.

I can tell you this, QoS and "rate limiting" are not the same thing and I don't believe you can accomplish rate limiting via QoS. QoS is a method of prioritizing traffic. For instance, we give highest priority to Videoconferencing traffic. Second highest goes to VoIP traffic. The lowest priority is assigned to http traffic.

As to whether or not the equipment in question can rate limit, the documentation will tell you. Barring that, you could look for a forum dedicated to HP switches or even contact their support people and ask them about it.

If you're real lucky, one of the other guys that hangs out in here and helps will have experience with that equipment and be able to help you better than I can.

Thank you very much for the answer.

According to HP manuals, its possible to migare QOS policy with Rate-limit, i just want to be sure about that.
you can see that in the PDF in page 312,

and i have second question: the port that i want to limit is the port that goes to the firewall and from there to the internet, my wan link is 8Mb, i want to limit the traffic from specific vlan to 2 Mb, in HP i need write it with kbps and not Mb, so 2Mb equal to 2000 kbps?
