Programmer Needed for new product idea

October 23, 2012 at 15:14:11
Specs: Windows XP
I have an idea for a simple program that I believe would be very commercially profitable. I have zero knowledge of programming.
My questions are:
Where /who should I go to?
I have no funds to put into the venture so I would be offering or retaining a percentage. or partnership. The person/company would need to have ability and knowledge to not only program but to put into place the legal license agreements, promotion. production and sale.

What precautions should I take to assure my idea is not stolen or passed along. to others?

I have done basic research and don’t believe the product is anywhere available. But would be purchased by many thousands if not millions.

If I retain a percentage, what should I be able to expect?

Where can I go for trusted advice?

I would appreciate any thoughts and recommendations on the subject. .

First bit of advice, don't go to a large organisation, you will lose whatever it is. Unfortunately if you don't have the basic knowledge to get at least a basic idea up & running then it is very difficult to protect it completely, you will have to rely on someone else at some stage and that is where you could potentially lose control.

You don't mention what area you are in, and you don't mention what sort of programming skills are required, so specific advice is difficult, and probably not recommended on an open forum.

I appreciate you responding.
So. if you were me, how would you proceed? or am I to just forget about it? I Don't want to do that because I believe in it's value
I know it's a difficult question but there must be a way for someone like me to put a toe in the water without having it bitten off by sharks

If your idea is truly innovative then get a patent on it before someone else beats you too it. I'm not sure how easy this is, depending upon where you live. If the idea is really valuable then it would probably be worth contacting a lawyer specializing in patents.

Once you have the patent the easiest course of action would be to licence it to a large manufacturer who have the resources to produce, market, and sell the product.

Without giving too much away, is this a software or hardware idea - ie do you need any sort of manufacturing done or is is simply a program? If it does require manufacturing then your only recourse may be to using a larger company, but if it is software then you really need to try & find a friend of a friend who can at least help you to get started.

As ijack says, a patent is a good idea and there are companies that will handle the patenting for you - it may be worth asking for their opinion first of all, Google 'patenting an idea' to see what is involved.
