Ping works, internet don't

March 3, 2011 at 06:03:52
Specs: Linux Debian
I have linux debian. Internet works fine, but I have a problem with one certain website. I can ping this site, use wget or download manager to load some files from it, but when i use firefox, conqueror or opera to open this page I get an error. I already tried to use IP adress in browser and flush my dns cache but this won't work either. Anyone might have an idea what's wrong with the system?

Try nmap -v -P0 -p 80 the_particular_ip_or_webserver

Does this show the port 80 as open?

Flushing your DNS will do nothing because if you are able to ping the FQDN then the DNS is working fine. It sounds like a problem either with your browser (not likely being you tried three) or the site you are visiting. They may not have a default page registered on the server or there is a port blocked like mention above. What is the error you get when you visit the site. Is it a 404 error or what? It could also be they are not using a well known port for the site like 8080. It could be many things but we need more to go on.

The site is real-debrid.com. If I open the site in my browser, the browser tries to load it, but after one minute it says: coudn't connect to the server.
This is what I get for nmap:
----------------------------------
nmap -v P0 -p 80 real-debrid.com

Starting Nmap 4.62 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2011-03-03 15:14 UTC

This is odd, because when I do an nmap to real-debrid.com, I get:

nmap -v -P0 -p 80 real-debrid.com

Discovered open port 80/tcp on 93.174.93.130
Completed SYN Stealth Scan at 17:09, 0.02s elapsed (1 total ports)
Host real-debrid.com (93.174.93.130) is up (0.022s latency).
Interesting ports on real-debrid.com (93.174.93.130):
PORT STATE SERVICE

As you can see, port 80 is show as open.
And the website can be accessed by internet browser.

Is there any other firewall or proxy server (transparent proxy between your pc and the internet?
Is you network a home network or a corporate network?

You may try to boot your computer with a linux live cd, to check, whether the problem persists.
