OpenVPN and SMTP

Specs: Windows 7, 2.8 GHZ/1 GB
I just recently set up an OpenVPN Access Server so I'm pretty new to it and all the configurations. I did this mainly to encrypt my traffic while on my school's network (Did you know that ALL traffic is sent as plain text, even over the intranet?) and everything has been going fine except for one problem. When I try to send an email using Microsoft Outlook, I get an "Undeliverable: 554 Domain Relaying denied" error. I can receive emails fine, just not send them. What causes this problem and how can I fix it?

Thanks!

Actually, I figured this out. I had to set Outlook to authenticate with my ISP's SMTP server before sending the email. I wonder why it would have to do this over the VPN but not without it...
