What kind of file have you downloaded?
If you have downloaded an archive file, e.g. a RAR file, you have to unpack the file first.
The you will get access to the executable files.

You can download and install VideoLAN client for free and install it, to play your video files.
Go to http://www.videolan.org.
When installed, you can simply doubleclick the AVI file and it should be opened in VideoLAN client.
