No Internet connection after rootkit removal

November 10, 2011 at 14:24:44
Specs: Windows XP, AMD Athlon/1gb
Please help. I had a serious infection in my PC desktop (a very harmful class of rootkit) and the only onle solution was Combofix. But after "cleaning" my Internet connection is not working anymore. All the solutions I have found about restoring Winsock funcionality were useless. I have a laptop connected via Wi-Fi and it is working fine. So any problem with my modem or router should be ruled out. Especially because the same desktop can connect to the Internet using Ubuntu Linux.
Please help. I have not found any solution so far.

I had a serious infection in my PC desktop (a very harmful class of rootkit)
Question: How do you know it's clean?
Difficulty: "My PC told me it was," is not an answer because it has a rootkit.

Ok, probably you are right...but Combofix warned me about this. "Probably you won't be able to connect to the Internet after this cleaning. If this problem occurs, try to run Combofix again". And I did it. I accept that this program could "clean" the rootkit by deleting all the infected files, but I'm not sure because the last running deleted the first Combofix report as well...

Well, you're in "luck," because my suggestion for your rootkit problem should fix your network problems.

Backup any data you care about, reformat, and reinstall Windows. Make sure the backed up data is clean before opening it.
