Networking No Longer Works

March 29, 2009 at 17:33:13
Specs: Windows XP Pro SP3, P4 2.80GHz/2GB RAM
I have 2 computers hooked up to EtherFast 10/100 5-port Auto Sensing Switch EZXS55W using Cox Communications Motorola SURFboard model SB5101.

My computer is XP Pro SP3 P4 2.80GHz with 2GB of RAM

2nd computer is XP Home SP3 Celeron D with 1GB of RAM. Compaq Presario SR1410NX.

I had recently Restored my old computer and took my brother's HDD out of his computer and made it into an external one. The network was all setup through McAfee's 3-user Total Protection and worked fine. Then a couple of days ago we could no longer share the printer or files. I tried setting up a home network through Windows but it's not working. I tried getting help on McAfee's forums but no one replied back. We both can connect to the internet but we can't connect to each other.

I tried to ping his computer but it timed out. I tried pinging my computer from his and it timed out. We are in the same workgroup MSHOME.

Did the ipconfig /all and here is what it says:

First thing that catches my eye is that your Subnet masks are different on each PC. One is using 255.255.254.0 and the other is using 255.255.248.0.

Perhaps you should consider setting them both to 255.255.248.0 and see if that resolves the issue.

I tried that but it didn't work. I contacted my isp through a live chat but they couldn't help. Just gave me a number to call but it's too late to call now. I released and renewed my ip but it gives me the same one. I give up. Just have to have my brother print directly from my computer and transfer files through cd.
