Since you don't mention configuring tcp/ip on the printer I take it you haven't followed the manual for its setup.

Here is a link to the manual

Most Canon printers start their setup via usb; then tell will you when to go to network connections….

In-case you don't have the manual…

http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/6/03000...

is where to download it. Pages 16 onwards are about setting up the printer both usb and ethernet.

For whatever reason with this model they appear to have changed their installation/setup sequence. But it is reasonably clear in the manual?

Ensure you are using automatic DHCP setting - NOT manual. Automatic DHCP will allow it get and ip address from the router - ref. page 19…

If you have a spare ethernet cable… perhaps try it with that to; as occasionally one have a duff cable and not know it. Also ensure the cable is securely inserted into the network ports.

Does the printer show up at all in your list of printers - not likely if you can't get the tcp/ip address established...?

Looks like we crossed in time on this one Wanderer…

I agree it sounds a little as though he hasn't followed the how to do it. I have seen easier setup routines from Canon - this is not one of them…

And the link you provide is to a more complete version of the manual -or at least to a very complete reference guide…; and better laid out?

Between the two versions "our visitor/friend" may be able to set it up OK?
