Net work activity without request

January 7, 2010 at 10:04:20
Specs: Windows XP
It is seen many times that the data transfer network indicator shows activity even no request has been made. Can I know what is downloading/uploading. I have disabled auto updates of windows-xp sp2 and anti-virus etc.

This is normal activity. It's just the NIC on your PC and the port on the switch confirming that they're still connected.

If this happens, you can open a command prompt (CMD) and use netstat -abn to check, what connections are currently established and to which internet address these connections are going.
If there are only connections listed to 127.0.0.1 and 192.168.1.1 (or whatever your router address is), these all are local connection, you don't have to worry about.

If you are on a cable modem then that is normal , it is a shared medium and you see everyone else in your neighborhoods traffic because you share your bandwidth with everyone else in the neighborhood.. If you have DSL then normally you should see very little going on unless you are browsing or uploading as your link is a dedicated line back to the central office.
