Solved NAS/TV no longer getting on with each other!

March 20, 2013 at 03:34:14
Specs: Windows 8, Intel e5200 dual/2gb
Since upgrade to Windows 8, the relationship between my Zyxel NAS221, my sony KDL CX520 and my Windows PC has rather broken down.

The TV has a facility for playing media from connected sources and although Sony seem fussy about what it will and won't play, it could generally be persuaded to work with most formats, either via the NAS 221 or Serviio (which appeared as available servers). This was under Windows 7 and Vista at various times.

SInce the upgrade though I cannot get Serviio to work. I've tried various other products (including Sony's own homestream, Plex) and can't get those to appear as available in the TV menu either. Am I failing to enable some windows 8 setting somewhere? The NAS 221 still appears as before, but is very temperamental about what it will play.

Please forgive me for confusing DLNA, servers and so forth - I do try but am confused by what is what in networking issues. I've tended just to connect things and hope they work and by and large they do, or have with a bit of tinkering, This one's got me though!

If anyone can help I'd be very glad and grateful. Perhaps there is an all-in-one solution?

Many thanks

Thank you, I've had a look and that seems hopeful.

Were you referring specifically to the bit about enabling the "default administrator service" or "enabling HomeGroup sharing" - I am perhaps being dim (not for the first time) but not sure which to try, or to do both?

Try the Home Group first. If it doesn't help, try the other.

Many thanks again. That seems to have worked.

I also notice that there are only so may profiles that the TV can display, and I had to remove a few redundant ones before Serviio had room, as it were, to appear. This may be relevant to users of this model of TV only, but worth a look if you're struggling?
