My FTP server doesn't work. Please Help.

Microsoft Windows server 2003 enterprise
September 14, 2009 at 12:23:25
Specs: Windows Server 2003
Hello. I just set up an FTP Server on my Web Server and since the internet is going directly into the Server, I forwarded the port to 127.0.0.1 which is localhost. Now, I go to a remote internet connection and use CuteFTP, No Problem accessing the FTP via Anonymous, but when I use Internet Explorer/My Computer, it hangs and then tells me it can't connect. It says the operation has timed out.

When I try to connect to my IP address inside my internet connection, it tells me 220 Type Set A, 227 Entering Passive mode with some numbersand 446 connection closed; transfer aborted.

Does anyone know how to fix this FTP Issue. All I want to do is make this an anonymous site for my friends to get and fetch data on my server. I would like to do this anonymously before I create passwords to the FTP Server. This is the first time I am doing this and I have no experience with FTP Server.

I am using IIS 6.0 on my Windows Server 2003 Box.

All I want to do is make this an anonymous site for my friends to get and fetch data on my server.

I seems to me like you've accomplished that already. At least, earlier in your post you said,

Now, I go to a remote internet connection and use CuteFTP, No Problem accessing the FTP via Anonymous,

To me that says, it's working fine with CuteFTP so tell your friends to download it (CuteFTP) and use it as compared to the other methods that don't seem to be working.

Personally, if all you want to do is give your friends access, I think it would be safer in the long run to secure your ftp site and use accounts for each user and disable the anonymous access. But that's just me, I worry about getting hacked and I know it's not that hard to do from ftp.

You can easily setup sftp instead.

Why would you forward the local host IP?. You forward your systems IP that is also part of the ftp server config.

Curt, thank you for your answer and security tip, but I set it up this way to get it to work before i actually use it for production. I guess I will have to use CuteFTP, but before on my server I had before, I got it to work in Internet Explorer.

This is what CuteFTP Displayed:

It has an error message at xx.xxx.xx.xxx:6343 when it gives me a long list.

the xx is my ip address hidden. also i am using routing and remote access itself on the server and its forwarding to my port number to to 127.0.0.1 for port 21.

Anyways, I have another question. Speaking about security, how do I Map each FTP account for users home directories on the server? I want to be able to let users access this ftp site by themselves logging into my server as their name and then they can access their documents via CuteFTP or Normal FTP.

sftp is simply secure ftp. When used over non-secure channels the password is not transmitted clear as with ftp.

I think you need third party support for sftp in IIS6, I would have to review that(I forgot it all)

Dunno about cute but filezilla server is real easy.

I set up Filezilla and now I get 425 Can't open data connection. Its like another FTP Server, not SFTP.

425 Can't open data connection error.

Problem

425 Can't open data connection error
While using SmartFTP with a firewall the user keeps on getting a 425 Can't open data connection error.

Cause

The 425 error means that the data channel is blocked or closed between you and the server you are trying to connect to.
Solution

* For Active connections open ports 20 and 21
* For Passive connections open ports 21 and 1024+ (and higher)

If a successful connection cannot be established, check all devices that are between the client and server to ensure that the proper ports are open (e.g. routers).
