You would expect a server to ask for a password when you try to access it. What exactly are you trying to access on the server (web page, shared folder, ftp,...), and do you administer it?

Is this a company server (you talk about "all the other users with XP")? If so, talk to your IT guys. They will be able to look at logs on the server to determine your problem.
