I am trying to install Linksys WRT54g v5 router in my Toshiba Satellite with Vista. Cannot complete installation using mfr's software. I get to step 7 and installation freezes. Any suggestions? Thx

Try not using the software.

If it's installed on your laptop, uninstall it. Once you've done that, connect the laptop to a LAN port on the router with a network cable. Once connected, open the setup guide (likely on the CD and could be called "manual") and get the default IP of the unit. It's likely to be something like 192.168.0.1.

Statically assign your laptop an IP in the same subnet (for the above example I would use: 192.168.0.2) and give the Default Gateway and DNS IP the IP of the router (192.168.0.1) and 255.255.255.0 as the subnet mask.

Once you've done that, open a web browser, type the IP of the router (192.168.0.1) into the URL field and hit Enter.

You should get a login screen asking for username/password. The default for most is either:
Username = admin
Password = admin

or

Username = admin
Password = none (as in, leave that field blank and click on OK)

I've setup a lot of SOHO routers over the years and I've never once used their silly (and totally unnecessary) software.
