Laptop-cable modem connection

Specs: Windows XP
Ok, let me start from the beginning. It might be quite long story but that way I can give loads of details and hopefully get my answer. In October I moved to Holland. Happily I connected my Acer laptop to the unsecured wireless network and I used it without any problems until january 2009.Last weekend of January I went to France and there I connected for 10minutes to my friends wireless network. When I came back home in Holland I still managed to browse online in the evening but from the following day I couldnt connect anymore although my laptop still could see the same wireless unsecured network in a range. I didn't bother to fix it as I was moving shortly after.
Week later I moved into new place where Motorola SB5100 cable modem is. It seems to be working correctly, all lights are on and when I connect my laptop to it with USB cable I only hear characteristic sound of plugging usb cable but nothing is happening. My laptopt doesn't react at all.
I read somwehere here that I should use cd and install usb drivers etc. first but last night I spoke on the phone to my neighbour, who uses excatly the same of connection and she told me that when she moved in, she only connected her laptop to the modem and Internet work immediately. When I connect my laptop to the modem I see PC/Activity light going on so modem see my laptop but other way round nothing!
Do you have any idea what could be wrong? Is it my laptop and can I fix it myself?
And one more thing-am pretty sure it's something wrong with my laptop as from time to time it manages to connect wirelessly to unsecured network from outside but even I get confirmation that I am connected and the icon flashes blue I still cannot use an Internet.

Do you not have a NIC? What does ipconfig show?

Hi Jenni,

When I go to cdm and check my ipconfig it gives me info that my wireless and ethernet media are both disconnected. But as someone already advised me-I will try this evening with Ethernet cable instead of USB. Maybe this will help. If not then I will be back on here tomorrow:)

I would go with the ethernet connection. It's more reliable than USB.

Ok,
I checked ethernet cable last night at home and today i am connected to my work network wirelessly. I have discovered that I am connected now and all work fine but....I am not connected to the Internet. The only way to display i.e. yahoo.com is to type it's IP address. Any URL doesn't work as well as connecting to msn and other messangers.
I have found also that I have a virus ISTBar which apparently hijacks IE. That's why am just trying to get rid of it to see if it'll help. AVG only found it but couldn't delete it so am using spybot as recommended on one of the websites.
Anyhow I remember I was getting this virus before when I was still using internet but AVG was always healing it. Maybe this bugger activated after some time and hijacked my IE? Ok Spybot is scanning now and hopefully in an hour I will know more to ask you guys about.
Thanks for all your help so far.
