Solved Internet connection only works in safe mode

October 3, 2011 at 14:13:46
Specs: Windows XP
I am unable to conect to the internet unless in safe mode. If I disable my firewall in normal mode I can connect but it seems a bit slow. I have used Hijackthis and it gave me a log file which I can paste if needed.

The analysethis tool has not highlighted anything that is dangerous. Anyone know why I can't connect to the internet?

I am in not particularly computer savvy so please bare with me.

try downloading malwarebytes, install, update and run a scan, remove selected at the end, it's free and effective. Not sure which web browser you have, but make sure a proxy has not been put in that shouldn't be. Your network adapter settings may have changed. Proxy is located in "connections tab" and most should not have a proxy. Right clicking on the network adapter and clicking properties under tcp/ip settings gives the network adapter properties....they are normally set to "obtain autimaticaly" can google these ideas for more detailed descriptions. I would run a scan to start.

Thanks for you help guys.

I tried Malwarebytes in safe mode but it didn't find anything. I then downloaded Superantispyware and it found a number of things. I cleared these off and hey presto! I could use the internet again.

No idea why, but neither Malwarebytes or Spybot (both fully updated) could seem to find anything.

Anyway thanks for the help...running a scan was all I needed to do as you said (although with different spyware)
