internet access via ethernet

Compac presario DESKTOP
April 2, 2010 at 07:41:15
Specs: Windows 98, 95mb
I just completed a new install of win98 on my old compac presario desktop.
I am looking for instructions on how to establish internet connection to my xp computer via ethernet cable.

I have roadrunner to main xp computer.

I have 2 other computers sucessfully connected with a linksys router
I sent a 3rd ethernet cable to the win98 compac

tried to get to internet via ethernet,

I have ethernet cable plugged in the back of the cpu..when I plug it in a yellow and green lite lites up.

I tried to add a web folder ( http://www.roadrunner.com ) but I get mssg that server could not be located or server is to busy

Does not appear you are doing a standard internet setup of
Internet<>modem<>router<>pcs

why?

You didn't answer the question.

If you expect any kind of help you need to explain why you have a convoluted configuration which appears to be
modem<>pc<>router<>other pcs.

I gave a good explaination on my system...the win98 is not close to the router or modem..even if it was close what is the difference...you can only connect 1 computer to the modem.....I already said i have 2 other computers on a ethernet cable a xp and a vista ...what did I leave out??? I was not vague as far as I can see..

Yes you can only connect one connection to the modem.

That connection should be the router. From the router's lan ports to the pcs lan ports is how the pcs connect to the internet.

So why is the router not connected to the modem?

Look here's the deal. We first have to determine what your topology is ie. how you have everything hooked up. Since you are not doing a standard config all sorts of things come up like ip addressing, patch cable vs crossover cable, etc etc.

So we start with why not a standard config. Then we move on to what physcially is connected to what and then we work on the ip plan.

Above post-

"I have 2 other computers sucessfully connected with a linksys router
I sent a 3rd ethernet cable to the win98 compac"

I guess I was not clear enough because I did not mention the modem in above post ...

So what I have modem and then to router to main xp computer...

.then 2 ethernet wires going out of router . 1 to a xp computer and 1 to a vista computer...

.in the 3rd router port I have 3rd ethernet cable to the win98 computer....
so how do I get the win98 computer to recognize the internet from the ethernet cable I just connected?

OK so this is a standard config of router than the 3 pcs. Great.

do a ipconfig on the xp box and then a winipcfg on the 98 box. What are the ip addresses, gateway and dns entries?

It is easy once you have done it

In win98 to go to Run and type in winipcfg and a box will popup with the ip information. Post it here

In xp you go to Run and type cmd then hit enter
This puts you in a black cmd box
type ipconfig and again post the results here for review.

In the win98 pc the tcp/ip settings are set to auto assigned ip address?

It has been awhile since I worked with win98 but I don't believe you have the right interface [adapter] installed. It should be lan adapter not ppp adapter. I believe you ppp adapter is your dialup modem if you have one in the 98 box.

You need to install your lan adapter.

Modem should be disabled if not being used.

which did you choose? phone or lan? should be lan.

Personally I ignore all of that, ie don't use the wizard. Are you showing a lan card in network properties?

You can not connect to your existing lan with a phone line btw.

Are you showing a lan card in network properties?

This is in properties-

Network adapters-
Dial up adapter
? Other devices
PCI communication device
PCI ethernet controller
PCI ethernet controller
PCI multimedia audio device

No how do I get this file? I will look through my stuff and try to find a cd or floppy. If I cannot find can you get me the file?
or
I was not the original user of this computer and I now believe if it ever was on the internet it must have been dial up

so if i want to get on the internet with ethernet wires I gotta buy a network adapter??

You should just be able to identify the brand of "PCI ethernet controller" then find the win98 driver for it from the mainboards cd or manufacturers web site if they still list it.

Newer nics will not have 98 drivers so no sense in bothering with that.

I don't know if it would work but the ONLY one listed that is not a modem and viable is;

Presario Accton NIC Driver for Windows 98/ME 09-2000 1.19.0714.2000 - 50.67k

download and install. The modem drivers are useless for you.

Ya that looked like the only one that might work also..
So I downloaded it in my xp computer and unziped and added to a cd rw and loaded it on the win 98 computer...

I get 2 folders after unzipping...i is called options and the other inf
When I open options folder there is a cabs folder...inside the cabs are 3 files...
1 called " ACC07D" and is a system file
2 "NETACC07" security catalog
3 "NETACC07" setup information

When I open inf I get 1 file called "NETACC07" setup file

BUT

I put the cd in the old compac the ACC07D" system file is not there
Seems I am still missing something important

I wonder am I missing drivers that should be in the driver folder?? I went into windows then drivers and it is empty

If that is the case should I go back to the HP site in above post and load all the drivers I can see??

I also forgot to mention that I have the 2 oroginal restore cds that came with this system ...the window 98 file that I installed is not the same win 98 that is now on the compac....do you think it is a good idea to try to restore to the previous win 98? Or should i open these and look for drivers?

Sorry to ask all of this but seems like logical questions..

thanks for the help !!

"do you have the compaq cd that came with the system?"

You replied "no I cannot find the cd but I found drivers"
and then " I also forgot to mention that I have the 2 oroginal restore cds"

Do yourself a favour, use both the Resotre CDs in the correct order.
1st will reinstall the OS and the 2nd will install all the drivers and apps.

That would be a good tack to take but since you have the new install and the only thing you are missing is the nic driver I would try to load just that first.

If you right mouse click on the setup file do you get "install" as a choice?
Are any of these files have an exe extension?
