October 17, 2010 at 09:59:15
Specs: Windows 7
My laptop at home is using a dialup connection and windows 7. The computer I use at work is a laptop using Windows XP Pro and a wi-fi connection for the internet. I'm unable to connect as it says the work computer is unreachable but I know the correct IP address and know it's connected to the internet. Can somebody please guide me through this?

Likely the IP address you get at work is one that is assigned to it by the router they must have for you to be wireless. That address in not a "live" address it is an address which works in your "work network". For example; The work router has an ip addy of (made up number) 66.29.244.62 would be a "real live" address. It may then assign you the number 192.168.1.1 another user 192.168.1.2 and a 3rd 192.168.1.3 and so on, which are not live addresses, everyone would have internet access via the default gateway (the routers address). So to connect to work, their tech has to set up the router to allow you access behind the router to your work computer. So you would need to first connect to the router and then via the work router...to your computer. This is probably why you are having problems connecting.

As long as the router supports VPN you can. Their are also programs such as "log me-in" which can be used for remote access.
