IE doesn't see wifi connection

Specs: Windows 2000, PII/ 256M
This is my first attempt with my linksys adapter connected via USB to my win2000 pc. I am trying to use my friends unsecured wireless connection. The icon for my wireless adapter shows successful connection. Problem is, when I open IE, it doesn't see my wireless connection and give me 'page can't be displayed, not connected to internet'...what am I missing? I have it set with Infrastructure and not Adhoc. And in IE settings, I have 'auto detect'. Are there any other settings I need to change? Thank you!

I did that and got , "unknown host".
I have IE setting at "Automatically detect settings" and
nothing else is checked. I also tried it without Auto settings...and there was no change.

linksys shows me connected with 100% signal and link.

I would be grateful for any ideas.

Thank you!

yes friend knows. I am not trying to see his computer(adhoc), just want to use connection, when in town. Does friend need to set anything special for me to use his connection? He has WEP disabled.

Thanks much!
