i dont have hostname want to find PC by MAC

Specs: Windows XP
I have a large network.I want to find a PC.I know only its MAC address and nothing else.Neither the computer name nor the IP.Hw can I do that?Its a layer2/3 network.All routers and switches are cisco.

From the MAC you can find the manufacturer. That might help to narrow it down. Alternatively do

arp -a

and see if the MAC shows up in the ARP table.

almost all the vendors are the same.I need the port from which that MAC is comming.

If you are doing dhcp server you will get both the host and ip from the mac

Otherwise you have to logon to each switch and do a search. Understand that the mac may show up on the trunk port between switchs which in this case you go to the downsteam switch to do your search again.

yes I can search by logging onto each switch but its a huge task as there are alot of switches.Is there any program available which will find the MAC in the network automatically??

One trick that I have tried in the past is to use the arp command to assign an IP address to that MAC and then connect to the C$ share (if it's Windows) to see what usernames there are on the computer. Obviously this can only work on the same subnet.
