You then also have to configure the ip settings at the windows xp pc manually.
Make sure, the ip settings do match the network, used by the solaris box.

Hi!
I disabled the firewall- no change.
My server has hme0= 61.202.11.0 and xp set to 61.202.11.10, netmask=255.255.255.0 on both. I set gateway on the xp to 61.202.11.0.
I am using a cross over cable.
I also added a route to the route table to have requests from 61.202.11.10 sent through 61.202.11.0 as gateway.
Also when my server boots it indicates that 61.202.11.0 is the default gateway.

61.202.11.0 is the network address and 61.202.11.255 the broadcast address.
You have to change the ip address to e.g. 61.202.11.1 on the solaris box.
You don't need to set routings or default gateway to access computers in the same subnet.
Default gateway is only used, when accessing ip addresses outside the subnet, e.g. internet servers.

Hi Wanderer;
I had an issue with the server ip, as indicated by paulsep. I set the ip to the network ip 61.202.11.0.
I reset it to .20 and it works.
But you were also correct about the firewall. Ping does fail if the firewall is enabled even if the server ip is correct.
Both solutions were necessary.

Thanks a great deal.
Have agreat weekend!!!
