HP_Mini 1010NR -- no power to wi-fi devices

Specs: irrelevant, irrelevant
We are using this Mini with a OS not supported by HP. The wireless led stays amber and will not switch on the Broadcom (or any) internal wireless device. Has HP locked us into only using the OS and drivers they provide/support in order to use, or even power 'on' the Wi-Fi devices?

A more important question: how do we power the internal Wi-Fi devices 'on'?

The OS is not irrelevant. Even if it is powered on you still must have drivers.

We are talking about FreeBSD/Pc_BSD as the OS.
The following is installed and recognized by the system:
bwn - firmware-kmod-0.1.0 Broadcom Airforce IEEE 802.11 Firmware Kernel Module.
