Are you connecting the switch to a LAN port on the router?

If you're sure you are, then perhaps you need to connect it using a crossover cable.

Alternatively, check documentation, you may have to use a specific port on the switch (ie: port 1 or port 8) to uplink to another device.

Your internet connection from the model needs to go into your router directly (WAN port), then you connect the switch to one of the LAN ports on the router. Then you can connect multiple devices to the switch (though most routers include more than one LAN connector, four connectors are very common).

It did sound like you may have things turned around and in the wrong order so be careful, you do not want any device connected outside of the protection of your router's firewall (with rare exceptions).

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
