How to Network XP desktop & Win7 laptop

Specs: Windows XP
I have spent well over 5 hours reading on how to network my wife's new Xmas laptop so she can see our desktop and thus be able to print her .... RECIPES!!! Yep I am calling myself out.

So I have my Desktop running win xp sp2 wired to a ATT 2wire (3800HGV-B Gateway). My wife's laptop is running win 7 and connecting to the same 2wire, wirelessly. I can ping each other and see both on the 2wire gateway, but they can not see each other. I have changed each to say workgroup, enabled sharing, run the wizard on the xp one, made sure netbios is enabled, turned off patop av and firewall same with desktop. The gateway itself has a firewall but I am not sure if I need to alter anything there. I have been trying things, but need a more methodical approach as each post I read is very unique and solutions may not be addressing my particular issue. I will be happy to provide more data just not sure what. The are both on DHCP... any help would provide for happy household...

You enabled file sharing but did you share the drives &/or the printer?

Are you listening to cumbia while you're working on the network? Maybe that made it work?
