How to get to a computer in a VPN

January 2, 2011 at 20:48:27
Specs: Windows Vista
I have a working VPN with a WRVS4400N Wireless N VPN Router. There is a Windows XP computer on the network with a static IP address and a shared folder that I need to access with QuickBooks across the VPN.
I can connect to the router; but only doing that is of little use. Once my VPN connection is made, how do I find the computer on the other side and map a drive to it or get it with QuickBooks? I need to do this with a Windows Vista Computer and a Windows XP computer at remote locations. Windows Vista seems to be different than XP in that it will not let me type a network address in Explorer without adding an HTTP://. Network places does not seem to help either.

You would RDP to the quickbooks desktop once you have the vpn connection established.

web search remote desktop protocol for the how to.

Answers are only as good as the information you provide.

Thank you, but remote desktop leaves only one person using the computer at a time.
The computer is in use by multiple persons at the same time. Including the person sitting at the computer. Quickbooks sets up for this. Is there anyway find and access the file as though we are on the same network? The router allows for multiple VPN accounts to access the network and the router acts as the VPN Server.

In Explorer you can enter \\computername or \\ip-address, to access a computer in the network.
This will work on XP as well as on Vista.

Thank you!
It is always something simple. I was using a forward slash and needed a backslash. Good Grief! Thank you again.

When I am on the network locally the \\ works; however when I am connected via the VPN. it does not work. the computer cannot be found on the network. I do not remember this being this difficult the last time I didn it, several years ago.

I guess, you are dealing with a DNS issue over the VPN.
The client computer most likely uses another DNS server to resolve computer names and this DNS server is not aware of the computers at the other side of the VPN.
So you can use the ip address instead of the computer name or you have to make entries in the hosts file for these computers, or you have to make entries in the DNS server for these computers.

As I mentioned before, you can use e.g.:
\\192.168.x.x

Ok. for everyone in the same circumstance. Windows Vista is on the computer that is being accessed. Windows firewall has to be used for VPN to work on a Vista computers with the router we have. THEN in advanced Windows Firewall Setting I turned on Net logon Service, Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol, Routing and Remote Access and Windows Peer to Peer Collaboration Foundation. One, some or all of these have allowed me to see the computer and get to its files across the VPN and access the QuickBooks Files with QuickBooks. Hooray.
A very big THANK YOU for the help. Problem Solved.
