Without a CD ROM it is going to be impossible. If this laptop is completely devoid of any operating system you need to get a CD ROM drive. No way round it.

If there is an operating system of some kind on it the only alternative is to network it to a computer that has a CD ROM and copy the Installation files to a folder on the hard disk and install from that.

This is assuming that you do have a CD for Windows 98 or Wndows XP.

hey...i have the same problem with my portege R100, only, i do have an installation of windows XP SP2...but i dont have the CDROM...the problem is that i had once installed a vista transformation pack, and then uninstalled it..but few of the features like icons still remain, and in addition, my portege has become too slow...
so "moonwalker", if u do find a solution to that, please pass it on...i'l do the same....thnx...

Options:

1. replace the defective cdrom [best option]

2. buy an external usb caddy for a laptop drive. connect to a pc. format the drive as fat32 and bootable. copy the xp i386 folder to the drive. put the drive back in the laptop, boot it and start the install from the i386 folder.

You wont get a CD on-line, not legally anyway.

What you can do is find some with a Toshiba laptop the same as yours and borrow their CD. The CD itself is not important providing it is the same type as the original. It is the COA sticker stuck on laptop that is important.

Alternatively you could contact Toshiba and as them to send you the necessary CD. They probably will just charge you post and packing. CDs themselves are not worth much without the COA sticker that you already have.

The 3'd option is to get a USB CD-ROM that you can just plug into a USB port on the portege.
