The RJ45 port is an Ethernet port for a Local Area Netwrok and will not work with the telephone cable.

What you need is an analogue modem which will have an RG11 socket.

Depending on the Model of your laptop and you may be able to get an internal analogue Modem other wise it is an external Modem. Analogue modems for laptops are getting very rare.

BTW: Get rid of the upper-case. It is considered shouting and people don't like be shouted at.

Stuart,
my cousin lives in an area that does not have DSL, or cable internet available. she has been using dial up with a very old desktop which no longer works and no longer repairable. she's looking at a laptop but the laptops do not have a phone jack anymore - what can she do? after doing some googling and reading some of your posts - can she buy a RJ11 adaptor for the RJ45 port?
Your help is greatly appreciated!

No you cannot just simply plug in an adaptor to an ethernet port and connect to a telephone line. There needs to be a MODEM in the chain to communicate between PC and Phone system. In the old PC there was probably an internal 56K dialup modem. It may have been integrated in the motherboard or a PCI card but it was there.
Your modern laptop will probably not have an inbuilt 56K dialup modem and you will need to get either a PCMCIA plug-in or an external USB or ethernet connected dialup modem in order to access dialup internet. Steer clear of the cheap chinese usb Dongle type modems. They're rubbish.

Or alternatively an external 56K Modem with an RS232 Serial output, that is assuming the the laptop has an RS232 serial port, most do. Dial up Modems with Ethernet are pretty rare.
