i need to know which cables go to my router and which go to my desktop and my modem i have desk top plus laptop that i need to connect to the internet

they should all be patch [straight thru] cables from pc/laptop to router.

Depending on modem it can be either patch or crossover with patch being the most used in my neck of the woods.

The modem faces the outside world. If you think of the connections as a straight line, it would be modem, router, then PC/laptop. The ethernet cable that now goes into the PC from the modem would go into the routers WAN port. Then you need another ethernet cable(often supplied with your router) that goes from one of the ports on the router to the PC.

Forgot to mention if your hooking up the laptop also, it would need an additional ethernet cable. So that's three ethernet cables: one from the modem to the router, one from router to PC and one from router to laptop. If the router is wireless and the PC and laptop have wireless, then you don't need any cables.
