Solved How can I use PC from TV

December 19, 2014 at 01:45:05
Specs: Windows 8.1
The PC is remote from the lounge and TV (Sony Bravia).

They are connected via a wired connection.

I have been able to use the "Play to.." to play videos on my Bravia KDL from the PC.

Is there anyway to redirect the entire desktop to the TV in the lounge and remote control the PC, for browsing, games etc?

To direct all PC output to the TV, you will need to connect the graphics card on the PC to the VGA input port on the TV (just like you would connect a monitor to your PC) using a suitable cable.

Then select "PC" as the input source on your TV setup menu.

Then you'll need a wireless mouse and keyboard to control your PC remotely on the TV screen.

The Sony remote cannot be used to control your PC, that's impossible.

Hi Phil. many thanks, but that is not possible in my situation, the PC is in a separate room and the losses down a very long VGA cable would prevent it from working.

I was looking for a solution using the network connection, in the same way I can direct video to the TV using "Play to.." from a menu option on the PC. The TV automatically responds to network traffic and plays the video and I get sound via the TV as well. The TV appears in my "Devices" panel, but I cannot see anyway to direct output to it.

Also hoping there was such a thing as a remote that would feed back to the PC, I believe it is possible using an Android device, but I have not had much success with that.

Thanks again

I know for sure DisplayPort (standards 1.1 and up) supports Fiber Optic cabling, this would certainly solve any distance issues but it might be hard to find the actual cable itself (I don't know offhand of any place that sells them). A converter for VGA to DP would be easy to find.

From there it would be as simple as duplicating the displays.

To be honest, it would likely be much easier to set up an HTPC. You could buy something like this and just set up the PC like a media server. Or use an old PC you have lying around.

As for remotes I have no clue but you could likely control the HTPC with a wireless keyboard.

I'd suggest something like a Roku as they come with a remote and all but I'm not sure if they support streaming from a PC.

As a last resort, you could buy a refurbished PS3 or Xbox or something, that's what I have set up in my media room and it allows me to watch Netflix or stream from my PC in my office.
