|I know for sure DisplayPort (standards 1.1 and up) supports Fiber Optic cabling, this would certainly solve any distance issues but it might be hard to find the actual cable itself (I don't know offhand of any place that sells them). A converter for VGA to DP would be easy to find. |
From there it would be as simple as duplicating the displays.
To be honest, it would likely be much easier to set up an HTPC. You could buy something like this and just set up the PC like a media server. Or use an old PC you have lying around.
As for remotes I have no clue but you could likely control the HTPC with a wireless keyboard.
I'd suggest something like a Roku as they come with a remote and all but I'm not sure if they support streaming from a PC.
As a last resort, you could buy a refurbished PS3 or Xbox or something, that's what I have set up in my media room and it allows me to watch Netflix or stream from my PC in my office.
