Specs: win xp pro, 2.0 ghz - 1g
a friend has an older dell 8100 laptop that's been working fine, but quit accessing the internet a couple days ago. it shows it's connected to wireless lan with strong signal. the ip is correct, i even entered the ip statically. his homepage was msn, and he did disable msn under add/remove components, but i've tried several different home pages with no luck. didn't see any red or yellow warnings in device manager. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Run ipconfig /all in a command prompt and copy the output here so we can see what is happening. Why would you need to manually assign the IP? Change the network properties to obtain IP & DNS automatically. Is it getting a proper IP from the router? Is DHCP turned on in the router? Can others connect to the router without difficulty?

If it's connected to network correctly, you should be able to ping gateway IP (router IP) from that laptop.

Also try to use nslookup to resolve domain name, there is domain name resolving problem if it fails to resolve. You can configure following free DNS servers which are provided by OpenDNS, after that try again.

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Hope this helps.
