Hosting/Portforward Serous trouble

Specs: Windows XP
Hi there,
I have been working on this problem for quite some time now, and i dont seem to get it working.

The Problem:
I have been trying to host different games, so that i can play with my friends at home. But it wont work. I know that it is possible, cause i have once before accomplished this but in another house (divorced parents). I know about portforward (which seems to be the trouble) and i have followed guides at and done exactly as I was supposed to. But my friends can't join the games i host, i have a server going for css, and they can't reach it, and when i host wc3 games they can't join them either (you get the picture). So i downloaded a program at the website mentioned before, to check if the ports were open, and it concluded, that they where not! I have tried with two different routers (Dlink DI-524, and NETGEAR WGR614v5) none of it works. The problem is in no chance caused by a firewall, that's for sure.

I have been reading some stuff about the connection between the router and modem (mine is a ZyXel (more information will follow if needed)) but i dont know how to configure or anything, please help!

Ports not open.

Either ISP, router, modem, xp could block ports/protocol.

Most of the devices have a web based config page. Everyone has online doc's. Basically you either set you computer in ip range and directly connect to each device to config. Some have by default (might have to revert to OEM state) dhcp enabled and you just connect and use either IP address or name to connect to device.

Contact ISP to see if they block ports. If so you can sometimes change ports. Kind of a hassle.

You should keep firewall's up at all times.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10
