Home Router & Switch configuration question

January 3, 2011 at 16:23:50
Specs: Windows XP
We have a router at home in which two computers and an xbox are hardwired into. I would like to add two more computers and am considering placing an Ethernet switch in my son's room. If I do so the switch will house the xbox and two computers and then wire into the router about 150 feet away. Two questions: 1) is this length too long from a switch to a router? 2) can I connect a computer and xbox into a switch and run them at the same time. Currently we have no problem doing so into our router. Thanks!

You should have no problem doing any of that.

the wire can be 328ft so you are under that limit

Answers are only as good as the information you provide.

Okay, next question...which one to buy?? We have a gift card from Best Buy so we'll get it there. I tried comparing the following three but Best Buy doesn't give a lot of comparison information:

1. NETGEARProSafe 8-Port 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet Switch

2. D-LinkGreen Ethernet 8-Port 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet Switch

3. Cisco8-Port 10/100/1000 Smart Gigabit Ethernet Switch
