Just for clarification the lights don't show you have an Internet connection, they show you are connected to a router, switch, etc.

What is your computer connected to and what is the adaptor you mention?

If the lights on the network interface are not lighting up at either end (router/switch and PC) and you have it plugged in correctly, it could easily be the cable. If you have another cable you know is working properly, try it. If you get no lights then try plugging in another computer to the same port on the router/switch. If that lights up, then it's pretty conclusive evidence the network interface on the PC is not working properly. If it doesn't light up, try another port on the router/switch.
