got wifi downstairs but not upstairs - help

November 27, 2010 at 13:51:28
Specs: Windows Vista
Hi, I have a wireless router with WEP security. Upstairs I have a PC with a wireless network adapter in the tower. I also have a laptop and netbook. Internet upstairs on the PC is intermitant, and can just drop out for hours at a time, all the while this is happening, the laptop and netbook downstairs continue to be conected to the internet with no problem. I have tried re-booting the router but this makes no diffrence, you just have to wait until the PC feels like detecting the internet again. I have also tried repairing the wireless network adapter but this too makes no difference.
Any suggestions as to what the issue might be?

The issue is interference to the wireless signal between the router downstairs and the PC upstairs. Solid walls, floors, metal framework, other electrical appliances, house wiring, other devices such as cordless phones. Any number of things can hinder the wireless signal. If re-locating either the router or PC to find the best signal strength position is not an option then run a CAT5 cable.

Hi, thank you for your advice. I will see if we can re-locate it.
The router is in the hallway currently, so quite central to both upstairs and downstairs, but I know these things can be temperamental.
We can but try!
Thanks again :-)
