im away from home but dont have a router connected, how do i get connected to the internet on my wireless laptop pc

Go to a mobile phone shop and buy a mobile internet USB stick. It will have a specific amount of data usage programmed into it. It doesn't use your laptop's wireless adapter, it uses the mobile phone network through the USB stick. That's why you must pay for it.

Or, if you are in the UK, you can use your laptop's wireless to connect to BT "Hotspots" like BT OpenZone. This is free if you subscribe to BT Broadband, but will cost you if you are with some other internet provider.

If your laptop is wireless enabled, go to nearby cafe, restaurant or other public areas that provides free or paid Wi-Fi access and connect to it. You don't need router. You might try to locate those Wi-Fi hotspots as shown here if you want.
