Fast Internet Speed but Slow Page Loads

January 24, 2011 at 12:15:13
Specs: Windows 7, Intel Core Duo / 2Gigs
Lenovo T61P
Win 7
Wireless Connection (Router Linksys WRT54G2)

I installed Comodo's Firewall and during installation I accepted to install the Secure DNS too. Afterward I noticed my web-pages loaded slower than usual. They weren't extremely slow but definitely slower than what I've been accustomed. I tried some OPENDNS servers and others to see if it made any difference but it didn't. I also went to my router's setup page((http://192.168.1.1/)so I could manually add the previously mentioned DNS servers. I finally decided to revert back to my old DNS list. To disable using the Comodo DNS servers I did the following:

Wireless Network Connection Properties-> Internet Protocol Ver 4 (TCP/IPv4)-> Properties -> Select "Obtain DNS server address automatically"

I also went into to my router's setup page (http://192.168.1.1/) to set my DNS list to zeros so that I can get back my default ISP's DNS servers (207.69.188.185,186,187). However, website loading is still sluggish.

I thought the issue might just be a temporary hiccup from my ISP but my roommate doesn't have these issues. We tried a speed test at dslreports.com and the results were weird. On my laptop the results were 8500+ Kb/s with a 279ms latency. I was 10 ft away from my router. His results were 3000+Kb/s with a 11ms latency and he was 30 ft away from the router. Is the latency a major issue?

Any ideas or suggestions? Thank you.

Check you anti-virus. It is probably scanning the pages before they load. Your room mate may not have this turned on.

Also as a test of the DNS try loading the pages through their IP address instead of the FQDN (URL). Try yahoo at...

73.30.2.43

Just put the IP address in the address bar of your browser and this will skip the DNS.

I disabled both my AV/Firewall programs and tried loading pages using their IP addresses but I still get a stuttering page load. Especially images.

The above statement makes it rather obvious the "Commode" software you installed is responsible for "slowing" down your web page loading.

The key to troubleshooting this is the fact that after you installed this software, your web page loading slowed down and it was working fine before you installed said software.

If it were me, I'd uninstall the application (Windows actually has a built in firewall that works pretty well AND it won't slow down your web page loading.......keeping in mind, your SOHO Router also has a firewall up and running between you and the internet) and reset my DNS settings on the router back to what they were.

If you're messed them up too badly, reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure it.

DNS is pretty basic. It either works or it doesn't. I've never seen DNS break halfway and begin loading pages slowly. It either works and pages load, or it doesn't work and they don't load....there's no "in between" here.

The real problem you're now having is this "secure DNS" that's part of the software you installed and I wager the ONLY way to get rid of it is to uninstall that firewall.

I am the captain of my soul.

Indeed you were right. I uninstalled Comodo's Firewall and now my latency is back to normal and my webpages load normally once again. I will implement your recommendation and use windows 7's built-in firewall to work along side my router's. Thank you very much.
