Specs: Windows XP
Lately I have been noticing that whilst using my computer I gather an enourmous amount of internet usage when I am not even browsing the internet or not running any processes which require the internet. I am logged on for 7 or so minutes just WP and all of a sudden have racked up around 125 MB in data usage. Plz someone help!!!

If you think there are some unwanted connections, run netstat -ano from a command prompt. Do it just after a reboot & before you open a browser.

Check it not something like Anti-virus doing an automatic update. Most AV will do an automatic update on startup if a scheduled update has been missed.

125mb upload/download in 7 minutes is not an insignificant dataflow nor is it typical of an antivirus update.

Q. Do you have windows update set to automatic? Which level service pack do you have installed?

Have you done scans for nasties including antivirus and anti-malware? There are trojans and other types of infection that are not detected by antivirus alone.

download and run hijackthis then visit http://www.hijackthis.de/index.php?... and paste the logfile there for analysis.

You still didn't run netstat -an or -ano.

i used a program called net limiter which monitors all ingoing and outgoing connections and managed to block an application (dont think it was malicious) running on startup and trying to connect immediately. After that the problem seemed to dissolve. Thanks for the comments and advice really appreciate it :)
