Excel files open slowly on shared folder

Specs: Win2003 Small Business SP2, 4gb ram
Hello and sorry for bad English.

I'm having a problem with Windows 2003 server. Clients have Windows XP SP2 installed.
I'm sharing a folder which contains Excel and Word files. If I try to open them from WinXP machine I have to wait like 30-60 seconds before they open.

Recently I have changed permissions to read-only and suddenly documents started to open in 2 seconds. As I give write permission on the shared folder, documents open slowly again.

What can I do to make it go away? Thanks for your help in advance.

Do the excel files open slow if done at the server?
Do your workstations point to the 2003 server for dns?
What drives does the server have in it?

Thank you for your reply.

I do not have Excel installed on the server, so I can't check if they open slow.

Yes, workstations point to server for dns.

I've got RAID1 and two SATA drives. There is no difference where these documents are stored - they still open slow as I set write permission on them.

Install excel on the server and test.

Give users full control. What happens to access time?

When was the last time you defragged your server drive?

I've already gave full control to users. Same situation.
One of SATA drives is completely new and the problem remains.

If I connect my computer (on which I have Excel 2007 installed) and open same documents - everything is OK. Unfortunately we can't afford upgrading Office on all workstations

Are these 2003 or 2007 excel files?

Clearly permissions are not the issue.

If you are a mixed 2003/2007 Office shop you will experience a delay opening a 2007 document on 2003 Office due to the conversion process.

Solution is to only save in 2003 format.

OK all 2003 files.

When have you defragged the servers drive?

We need to test access from the server of these files to determine if this is network related or just server related.

Install excel on the server and test

I've just defragged all drives. It didn't help.
If there was a problem with accessing the drive it wouldn't metter if there is write permission set or not.

Also Excel 2007 would have problems with opening same documents but it opens them in 2sec.

What were the results when you open them from the server?
