I recently set up a wired DSL connection in my house and am looking to split one ethernet wall jack so I can use it for 2 computers and an xbox 360. I am wondering whether I need a ethernet switch or a router to do this or even both?

Thanks

You only have a modem now? If so then you need a router. If this room only has one wall jack you will need a switch in the room to get pcs/xbox connected.

I live in a fraternity house with 27 other people and we have a central modem. But every room only has one ethernet jack so I'm just trying to figure out what is the easiest way for my roommate and I to be on the internet on the same time.

You don't have a modem if you have 27 connections. That is a router. Put in a switch in the room you want more access in. Get one that supports mdi/mdix so no rewiring required.
