Dell Precision 340 workstation

Specs: Windows XP
I have a Dell Precision 340 and I went to connect my modem and wireless router to the PC via my ethernet cable. When I hook it up, my computer says new hardware ethernet controller and wants me to add it. When I try to add it, it will not let me and wants me to add the hardware via a disk or CD rom, which I don't have. Because I can't get the ethernet cable to work on the PC I can't get internet, however the wireless router still works.......what can I do? Someone suggested downloading a driver, but will that help and which one?

You do need a driver. If this Ethernet Controller came with the Dell computer you will get Drivers from the Dell Website. If the Ethernet Controller is an add-in then you need to got the the device manufactures web site.

when i put the ethernet cable into the ethernet port on the PC....the "add ethernet controller" pops up? So I am confused as to what that means, I need to add the ethernet cable or is something need to added to make the port usable?

I do have it hooked up the way it should with the ethernet cable to the PC....my wireless router works and i can get internet with it so it makes me think the ethernet cable works fine....its just when the PC tries to get an internet connection with the ethernet connection, it doesn't work......so that is why I am confused

It means you need to install the driver as detailed above.

Look in Device Manager and see what it shows there for Ethernet controller. If there are any exclamation marks or question marks then the Ethernet Controller is not installed.

Go to command prompt and type ipcongig /all and post the results
