|I know nothing about BGAN but have some experience with satellite.|
Unless it's changed since I last used it, satellite isn't the best thing available but if you don't have a wireless network in your area, it's somewhat better than dialup. Not much mind you, but somewhat.
The way it used to work (and probably still does) is it's using the satellite down to your computer, but you use dialup going back up to the internet. The 'down' stream from the satellite is a little faster than dialup in most cases. If it still works this way, you will still have to have a dialup modem and dialup connection.
If there's a way to avoid satellite, such as a local wireless ISP, I'd avoid it at all costs. I looked into it for home use myself about 7 or so years back as I was living on an acreage 30 miles from the city and there was no wireless ISP in the area. The cost was also prohibitive. I would have had to lay out around $1,000.00 just to get it setup. For the type of bandwidth we're talking about, it wasn't worth it.
It matters not how straight the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate;
I am the captain of my soul.
