err_connection refused (browsers won't connect to internet)

February 11, 2017 at 13:47:43
Specs: Windows 10
Hi, I'm trying to go online and all the browsers don't let me connect. Chrome says: www...refused to connect (Err_connection refused) and Opera says the same. Wifi is connected and teamviewer works and troubleshoots finds no issue. I tried 2 fixes found online (something with DNS and CMD)
I have windows 10. Scans found nothing either. I'd like to try and fix this without downloading programs if possible.

See More: err_connection refused (browsers wont connect to internet)

copying from another post: "Looking at another post on this issue, it mentioned that the winsock file could be corrupted after removing malware which interferes with internet. I tried resetting the winsock catalog through command prompts, but this did not work either - the WinSock Diagnostic through the IE Network Diagnostic says I need to reset the winsock catalog."

I think this might be what happened to me as the last thing I did Friday before I closed laptop was a ADWcleaner scan which found 14 registry errors which I removed... since then...this happened.

I must say these 14 keys returned weekly on adwcleaner. Only since I deleted bittorrent, they didn't come back.

Looks like it will be best to do a system restore to a date just prior to running ADWcleaner.

I have no idea where trouble could come from. I also have a filter installed, I hope it's not that making problems.
I have restored it to before, let's see the results later when it's done.

"I hope I won't need to reset and lose files :( "

Instead of a Reset, here is the info on Refresh.

How to Refresh Windows 10
http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/...
If you're having problems with Windows 10 on your PC, you can try to refresh, reset, or restore it. Refreshing your PC fixes software problems by reinstalling the OS while preserving the user data, user accounts, and important settings. All other preinstalled customizations are restored to their factory state. In Windows 10, this feature no longer preserves user-acquired Windows apps.
A refresh will only affect the partition that Windows 10 is installed on.
For more information, see: Push-button reset (Windows Drivers)
This tutorial will show you how to refresh Windows 10 on your PC to reinstall Windows and keep your personal files and settings, and apps you installed from the Windows Store.
You must be signed in as an administrator to be able to refresh Windows.

You have to save them on a some form of media & then upload them from a good comp.

Anything that wasn't (and thus isn't) included in the original factory installation/setup, and thus part of the recovery partition content, "will" be lost when a system is reset to factory gate state (i.e. as was when new).

I don't use chrome, so not sure if it works like IE and FF... Howver i suspect it will have an option to either export bookmarks or allow you to save them somehow?

Also any other cricical info (files of photos, music etc. are the two most common of course), ensure you have them duplicated off the system. Typically to DVD at least (make two sets), and to an external hard drive too is nice(r). Check and update copies at regular intervals...

Hi John, I know you're sleeping but wanted to say that restoring the deleted registry entries fixed the problem. I can now go on internet again. But I have 2 questions.
1. can you look through my log and see if the computer is ok?
2.I am scared to use ADW cleaner again. I used it because chrome and the whole computer became really sluggish. Now it seems ok but what should I do next time it becomes slow. I have a filter installed called nativ and this may very well be the reason for the slowness but it's something I can't take off. I guess next time I'll use ADWcleaner, these problems will come up again...

As best I know, and by my own experience (and many others here have similar), adwcleaner doesn't generate or create problems - if you're using the genuine bona-fide item. There are several utilities "out there..." that have a nearly identical name and some of them are known to have issues, and cause problems...

This is the one we advise to use - just in-case you got another one (with a "similar" name). These are two of a few safe to use download sources...

https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/do...

http://filehippo.com/download_adwcl...

Always use the manual/custom mode to install "anything" downloaded off the web; "never" the default automatic option. Watch for and uncheck any pre-checked boxes, other than the one form actual utility or whatever you want. That way you avoid installing all manner of junk, and changes to the system which you neither need nor want. Much of is a true PIA to eradicate too...

Also, if you haven't already, start the habit of regularly copying/duplicating important files (typically photos etc.) to external storage as I suggested in my previous response here... One can "never" be too careful or have too many duplicates/copies elsewhere - off the system.

Thanks for the good advice!

"Can you see something in the logs John?"
I was waiting for the rest of the logs, there is a lot more produced by Tweaking.com, then my young brother arrived from interstate, to stay with us for 3 days.
Now you have it working, no need for me to go through the Tweaking.com logs.

"I know you're sleeping but wanted to say that restoring the deleted registry entries fixed the problem"
How did you do that?

"I see a few new programs installed themselves. Can I safely remove them?"
I had no idea until I googled. They are safe & come with W10.
https://windowsinstructed.com/expla...

Next step.

Run DelFix. Copy & Paste the contents of the log please.
https://toolslib.net/downloads/view...
DelFix is designed to delete all removal tools used during a disinfection.
Indeed, these tools are often updated. It's recommended not to have and use outdated versions on computer.
Run the tool by right click on the DelFix icon and Run as administrator option.
Make sure that these are checked:
Activate UAC (optional; some users prefer to keep it off)
Remove disinfection tools
Create registry backup
Purge system restore
Reset system settings
Click Run and wait until the tool completes it's work.
Tool will create an report for you (C:\DelFix.txt)

Once you have posted the Delfix log, I will start doing some other checks, to make sure you are Ok.

Sorry, that's what we used last time'

It will produce logs only, nothing will be altered.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it onto your Desktop. If your default download location is not the Desktop, drag it out of it's location onto the Desktop.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow...
If we have to run Farbar more than once, refer this SS.
http://i.imgur.com/yUxNw0j.gif
Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the Desktop.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt)

Next step.

Update & Run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware ( MBAM ) Free Version. Use Quick scan ( now called Threat Scan )
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivi...
http://www.malwarebytes.org/free/
Make sure you uncheck > Enable free trial < at the END of the install.
http://i.imgur.com/tUFCbYz.gif
Click the Settings tab at the top, and then in the left column, select Detections and Protections, and if not already checked place a checkmark in the selection box to Scan for rootkits.
http://i.imgur.com/dZgt1g2.gif
Under Non-Malware Protection sub tab, make sure PUP and PUM entries to Treat detections as Malware are checked.
http://i.imgur.com/MKxr2K1.gif
Click on the Scan tab, then click on Scan Now >>. If an update is available, it will do so first.
A Threat Scan will begin.
With some infections, you may see this message box.
'Could not load DDA driver'
Click 'Yes' to this message, to allow the driver to load after a restart.
Allow the computer to restart. Continue with the rest of these instructions.
When the scan is complete, click Apply Actions.
Wait for the prompt to restart the computer to appear, then click on Yes.
After the restart once you are back at your desktop, open MBAM once more.
Click on the History tab > Application Logs.
Double click on the scan log which shows the Date and time of the scan just performed.
Click 'Copy to Clipboard'
Paste the contents of the clipboard into your reply.

Copy & Paste the text in Blue below & save it into Notepad on your Desktop & name it fixlist.txt
NOTE: It is important that Notepad is used. The fix will not work if Word or some other program is used.
NOTE: It is important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

Well done, you should be Ok now,.

This will help you keep adware off your comp.

Use Unchecky to help prevent these third party installs. Nothing is perfect, the badies are always ahead of the goodies, so be vigilant.

A reliable application that aims to protect your computer against third-party components often offered during software installations.

"Now it seems ok but what should I do next time it becomes slow"
Run Malwarebytes.

"I have an internet filter on my system which blocks inappropriate sites ... My internet is filtered by an outside company called Nativ USA"
If you do decide to uninstall, it cannot be uninstalled easily without a password.

"1. I went to adwcleaner, quarantined items and restored the ones I deleted last"
Nice work, didn't think about that, never had the need to use it. Now you know you have a safety net if it is a false positive.

When it is blatantly obvious that Adwcleaner is going to remove something you know is safe & want to keep, uncheck those items.

Since I have no idea what is safe or not, I guess we will only know once computer goes crazy ;)
Thanks for all your help. Since chrome starts getting buggy and not smooth out of the blue every few days, I still have no idea what's causing this. Sometimes a restart helps, sometimes not. I still think it's Nativ that's doing that but can't be sure. I still dunno where adware should come from as I usually browse safely and only install programs from trusted sources?

"Since I have no idea what is safe or not"
You never have to guess, Google everything.

"One thing that annoys me to no end by these fixes is that I have to keep logging in everywhere and it closes my (always) open tabs!!"
Run Wise Disk Cleaner ( Run the 1st three tabs, left to right. I use default settings, leave boxes that are unchecked, unchecked ) Reboot when finished.

Run Wise Registry Cleaner ( Only use Registry Cleaner & with default settings. Don't use System Tuneup, that is for Experts, you really have to know what you are doing ) Reboot when finished.

what you're telling me to do, is to fix the chrome sluggishness issue?
If yes; will it again close all my open tabs and log-ins?

Btw: it's going ok now so I'll leave it for now and do it once it acts up again.
THANKS!!!
