Edimax WiFi range extender issue with laptops

September 15, 2010 at 00:23:23
Specs: Windows Vista
hi, i have been using the edimax wireless extender, i think it's the EW-7416APn. it has worked well for about three months up until about a week ago.
when my laptop (win vista32 sp2) laptoip uses the connection everything is fine. but as soon as another laptop connects (win764), wether or not the other laptop is downloading anything, my vista laptop grinds to a holt and gets wicked lag spikes while playing wow and takes forever to load a page. it only happens when the win7 laptop is logged on and connected to the edimax too.
i have tried connecting one laptop to the edimax and the other to our router, and there is no issue, so i am sure its an edimax problem.
has this ever occured before ? do you have any ideas?
thanks for you help, josh

What happens, if both are connected to the router?
Does this also work?

hi thanks for the reply,
iv just tested it with both connected to the router via wireless and it seems that the problem has been reversed where the win7 laptop gets cuts and lags instead of my vista laptop.... the edimax was on and transmitting during this process, whether or not it makes a difference i dont know.
but it's thrown me, i thought it was the edimax causing the issue. iv looked through the belkin setup page and i dont think i know enough about the figures i see to make changes. could my port forwarding be an issue?

Possibly yes, but I don't know.
Whatfore do you need any port forwarding?

Anyway, if both computers are connected to the router, turn of the edimax and see, what happens and report back.

Hi sorry for the delay i had a big weekend.
so to update: the problem is for sure with the belkin wireless router, i tried bypassing the edimax while it was off and just connecting the laptops to the belkin wireless router and i have the same connection problems. iv talked with the belkin guys last night and they recommended i try downgrading the security to a 64bit wep code and to disable the ''wifi protected setup'' setting. also at the same time they had the firmware updated.
now, since the firmware update and the security settings changed my edimax can not connect to the internet via my belkin. i can go through the setup and configure the edimax to recognise and connect to the belkin, but im getting the 'unidentified network' 'local only' signs. i cant even access the edimax settings page through the web browser to play with them.
so i have set the security settings back to wpa2 personal and performed a factory reset on the belkin but it seems my edimax has been kicked out of the equation. things have gone from bad to worse :( i thought i could trust belkin technical support but it seems the have screwed me over..... could there be any more options?

I am having the same problem too with an XP laptop and a win7. Even when it is just the win7 laptop the internet works great but almost every half and hour or so it goes off and comes back on in 5 mins or so. Really wierd. However it is worse when both are connected.
My win7 computer keeps telling me that there is another computer on the network with the same IP address- could this be the problem. However when you set up the edimax extender you have to input the right Ip or it wont work- Ithink this is the problem but I have no idea what to do!!!
Can anyone help?
I also wondered whether the problem could be with the internet service provider and whether they have to give the main router certain permissions for the signal to be extended?
Also cant access the Edimax router page which is driving me mad as I think that may help!
