Solved Earthquakes windows gadget no connection

March 4, 2017 at 12:54:41
Specs: Windows 7 64
earthquakes windows gadget can't connect to server. Is there nothing on the other end anymore? No network connection issues with any other apps or browsers. Uninstalled and reinstalled - still get "No Connection or Server Down" message.

✔ Best Answer
Check your firewall software - - it may be blocking the app from network access.
If so, you need to configure firewall to "allow" network access for that app.

If firewall isn't blocking it, then server may be temporarily down, though I can't find any info on that - - search engine doesn't bring up any reports of problems with it other than your post.

Thanks for your thoughts. I double-checked and sidebar.exe is allowed through my firewall. I think the server that was aggregating the info is no longer active. Posed the question to the developer - no response. For anyone coming across this thread I found a trove of earthquake data (and much, much more) at http://www.globalincidentmap.com/ (though not in realtime widget form).

Is this one of these?:
https://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/20...

If so take care - they have not be recommended by MS for some years due to security issues.

Yes it is. Having spent a career (going back to the days of putting 286s on Novell networks) managing desktops and servers I am well aware of the MS position on gadgets. However, it is good that you posted the link so those who may not be familiar with the issue can make their own decision. The use of 3rd party gadgets is one theoretical threat vector that researchers never discovered in the wild. Was it ever used? Maybe, maybe not. I've used gadgets on my personal machines since they were introduced and have never had any problems, malware or viruses. (But I did not allow them on machines I managed ;>) My position is best summarized by David on the page you linked to.

I agree that David puts forward an interesting view.

Sorry but we have no idea about the background of folk who post on here unless they include their biography. I too have been around a while - first computer (DOS) plugged into the back of an analog black and white TV, next one had a hard disk (20M), and my first Windows machine (3.1) had 4MB of RAM but really needed 8.

Happy days.

Nothing to be sorry about. To be honest, when I posted my question I had completely forgotten about the sidebar/gadget vulnerability issue. Your comment and link was the responsible thing to do.

Ahhh.... the early days. I remember how thrilled I was to to get my 1541 floppy drive to store the planetary orbital position BASIC program I put together on my Commodore 64; the Okidata dot matrix printer the output went to; and the "advanced" monitor that (gasp) had "eye-strain-reducing" amber text instead of green!

Would you believe I still have my old BASIC programs on here running in Windows 10? At odd times I still run the odd one but mostly there are alternatives.

Not sure if this helps or makes the water muddier.
My 'Earthquake Meter V 3.1' gadget worked fine right up to 29th May 2017.
Now I have the 'No Connection or Server Down' error. Prior to that it worked fine with no adverse effects. This is affecting both laptops. I t would be useful if I/we all knew if this is a temporary issue or permanent. I suppose we will have to wait and see.

I'm not certain but as MS now disapprove of gadgets (security risk) they might have dumped it.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...

Most of them were third party programs (not MS). There were a whole stack of them.

Having the same issue too.
It's NOT a firewall or gadget issue - it's the USGS server.
No doubt a server port change or similar but without patching the .js the gadget is going nowhere

Same problem here on Win 7 Ultimate since 29 May.
If anyone finds a solution to this, please post here because I was very fond of this gadget (as I'm sure others were) ... I miss the audible alerts !

The only alternative I have come across are two browser extension from https://www.emsc-csem.org/service/B... which throw up a notification window everytime there is a new report. But only works if the browser is open. Have NOT found any alternative to the V. 3.1 of Earthquake Gadget either.

I've been looking too as the addgadgets author isn't responding to emails (never does ...)

This is VERY nice, but not free.

http://www.wolton.net/quake.html

I've had a quick look at the Earthquakes 3.1 gadget files but I'm not an expert in HTML, CSS and Javascript.

I'd imagine it's a matter of finding the server details in one of the js files and then find out what's changed in the past week.
BTW - the flyout is still working and current, just no quake location/magnitude data in the main window.

I have noticed that there is this free edition of Earthquake on the link that morph000 mentions above.
FREE EDITION for Windows Computers
This is a fully functional version of Earthquake 3D which does not include any complicated user agreements, nag messages, disabled functions, advertisements, user tracking, or other forms of pestware. 100% Google free since 2003.

Version 2.91 – Size is 1.1 Mbyte

DOWNLOAD FREE EDITION

Has anyone out there tried this.

Addgagets should not ask for donations via paypal if they do not bother to answer anyone or at least inform on their site that they are working to fix the Earthquakes meter.

Yes, I know there's a free edition and have tried it too, but the 3D FULL FEATURED version is so much nicer. But if the freebie does all you want that's fine...I'd sooner pay $20 and get the 3D one.

I got a reply from addgadgets facebook page . Peter Hall says that its been getting more and more unreliable for a while now, All of the USGS feeds have broken and the only one that I can get to work now is EMCS Magnitude 2 +
He did not indicate if he will be able to fix it (earthquake meter gadget) in the near future.
I will ask , see if he replies again.

Note : Peter Hall does not work for Addgadgets , its just someone who replied to a comment I made on the addgadgets facebook page. My Mistake .!

Elpojohn,

Thanks for the info and followup. I had removed the gadget shortly after my original post. I loaded it back up and found that USGS sources are still MIA. However, EMCS Magnitude 2 + did not work for me, BUT EMCS Magnitude 3 + did. Good enough for me for now.

Thanks again.

Reply to question from #9 Derek:

7 on one of the laptops. 8.1 on the other.

Incidentally having had a look at these pages today, I had another go with the gadget just in the off chance that it had been sorted out. I still got the server error message - except on one of the earthquake magnitude filter settings "4.5" Other than this all the other set up functions worked just fine, but only this particular setting updated from the server. I have read others have experienced similar issues but at different settings - Bizarre!
Alas, after I had shut down the computer and restarted it on my return home, none of the settings worked.

Sounds like an issue with that particular gadget and/or their server. Not much we can suggest - maybe they have a forum or some sort of webpage which could help..

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

From the previous comments, I would agree that it is a 'their end' server issue - possibly they have upgraded or re-configured their system, which is fair enough. As the earthquake v3.1 meter has been around for a while, I suspect it is/is becoming unfortunately obsolete in comparison.

I have vista 64 and 32 bit. It works on the 32 bit but not on the 64 bit. it works only on when you change Data: EMSC Magniture 4+ but on the 64bit have not figured that out yet. try the different data: offered.
