Solved dongle data sim nightmare

Dell Inspiron black 15r notebook

Specs: windows 8.1
I have gone mobile for a while and after reading countless forums (for Europe) thought that a dongle I bought a while back (HSDPA 7.2mps), being unlocked, would work. I bought a Carrefour data sim card (not France) and was assured that if my dongle was unlocked it would all work. NOT! The sim info booklet says to send an SMS via the connection to the relevant network to activate but how the hell am I supposed to send an SMS when the thing won't connect???? On my laptop the dongle is identified as a 'wireless terminal'.

Don't know the dongle...; never used one... But a very brief google trawl does mention drivers for it. So presuming there are drivers... have you installed them?

What brand is your dongle; and is it compatible with whichever networks you hope to use? There are two (at least) styles/types of networking in USA with respect to mobile phone technology; and the frequencies used in N. Am are not necessarily the same as in UK/Europe. Likewise for other parts of the world... (I am presuming the dongle is using mobile (cell) phone data services to connect?)

The driver installs when I plug the dongle in but you've mentioned compatibility which is probably the problem here. The dongle was bought in Asia a while back and perhaps the Carrefour sim doesn't like it. I know there are Carrefour dongles available but when I asked about them I was told most of the stores haven't had a delivery in while; and although the sim is supposed to work on any unlocked dongle (!), more than likely the fine print should read 'compatible unlocked dongles'. I may just have wasted 30 euros, ho hum. I will now have to locate all the public libraries en route.....
Thanks for your reply. :-)
